WASHINGTON, D.C., March 14, 2024 — U.S. Senators Katie Britt, Tina Smith, Kevin Cramer, and John Fetterman have introduced legislation aimed at bolstering the domestic bus manufacturing market by cutting red tape and providing more flexibility for local transit systems in purchasing buses.

Senator Katie Britt emphasized the importance of supporting domestic manufacturing and local transit agencies, stating, “Cutting senseless red tape while supporting Made in America manufacturers is simply common sense.”

Senator Tina Smith highlighted the impact of transit systems on the daily lives of Minnesotans and the need for updates to current regulations to strengthen the domestic bus manufacturing market. She mentioned, “This small change will also support U.S. bus manufacturing jobs, get more buses into service, and help Americans get to their work, school, and health care appointments more easily.”

Senator Kevin Cramer echoed the bipartisan effort to revitalize the bus manufacturing industry, noting the benefits of flexibility for local transit agencies and stability for manufacturers like Motor Coach Industries. He remarked, “This helps pave the way for further investment and job creation at the facility.”

Senator John Fetterman expressed the challenges faced by transit agencies in acquiring new buses and the importance of giving them more flexibility in purchasing. He stated, “Strong transit agencies are critical to making sure our communities are strong.”

The Bus Rolling Stock Modernization Act aims to enable bus manufacturers to apply for advanced payments up to 20%, allowing them to meet the demand of transit agencies and keep production costs down. This legislation is expected to support Made in America manufacturers, create job opportunities, and improve transit services across the country.
