Powerful Offense Leads UAB Baseball to a Win Over FIU

UAB (6-15, 1-3 C-USA) put up the most runs of the season to secure the 15-5 win in game one against FIU (12-11, 1-3 C-USA) on Friday, March 24.
UAB reached first in the second inning only to have FIU score runs in the second, third and fourth innings to take a 5-2 lead. Down by three entering the fifth inning, the Blazers began to rally after heads-up base running put Gavin Lewis Jr. in scoring position before John Marc Mullins hit into a single. A total of nine runs on eight hits, including a home run, put UAB in the lead by a score of 11-5. The Blazers scored in four straight innings to ultimately gain 15 runs on 19 hits for the victory.

UAB's offense was the name of the game led by Brayton Brown who played a career-high game. Brown went 4-for-6 after hitting two singles and two home runs on the night to collect a career and season high of eight RBIs. Five other Blazers recorded multi-hit games – Tyler Waugh (4-for-4), Logan Braunschweig (2-for-3), Blayze Berry (2-for-5), Henry Hunter (2-for-5) and John Marc Mullins (2-for-6).

Waugh collected a season high game in hits (4) and runs (2) while Braunschweig picked up the most runs scored in a game this season (3) along with his second double on the year. Berry has collected two hits in each of the last three games and recorded season highs in three different categories – RBIs (2), runs (2) and putouts (7). Hunter picked up his first multi-hit game of the year with a triple and a single while Ben Abernathy collected his second triple of the season. Mullins currently rides a six-game hit streak and picked up his third game with two RBIs in a single game.

Only two pitchers went to the mound for UAB in game one – Brooks Walton and Thomas Ballard. Walton (2-2) started on the hill for the Blazers and earned the win after he threw seven complete innings to allow five runs on 10 hits and tied his season high in strikeouts (8). Ballard followed and threw two innings and allowed no runs on one hit to secure the Blazers' 10-run win over the Panthers.
